Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At our diverse school in Brooklyn, we are dedicated to providing a safe and nurturing environment where students can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. Many of our students are native Spanish speakers. They are wonderful, energetic and always curious, and enjoy our interdisciplinary, project-based, arts and technology infused curriculum. In my Pre-K classroom, my goal is to create an inclusive, stimulating, collaborative environment where all children feel supported and loved. Creating spaces where school is seen as an extension of home is one way we achieve this goal.
My Project
Despite my tender loving care, and after giving seven long years of classroom use, our classroom printer has gone to the great e-cycle collection point in the city. It was a workhorse, and I have been lucky to have it as long I did. After managing to push it to June of last year with frequent quick fixes, a new printer is needed for this upcoming school year.
Printing photos and copies of student work is an important part of the learning process.
Every day, children expand their minds by engaging inquiry-based learning. Documenting the process using photos and copies of their original work reveal much about the understandings and learning of each child. As educators, we need a way to capture all our students do and preserve it for interpretation and portfolios.
The photos printed in class are an integral part of the classroom with displays documenting the children's learning. Documentation can take multiple forms—notes, photos, student work, a video- or audio-recording—but creating physical, explorable documentation makes learning visible when it focuses on some aspect of a child's thought process.
This new printer and toner will help me continue to display student work, advancing both students’ and teachers’ learning and contribute to wider collective knowledge-building.
