Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I cannot imagine going through life with all of the disadvantages that my students have. Lack of parent support, limited language, poor economics, and few life experiences are just some of the obstacles my students are facing.
Many of my students are limited in their experience with technology.
They come from homes where computers are a luxury. They need as much exposure to technology as possible.
My students already have 2 strikes against them. Most of my students come from a socioeconomically disadvantaged home. Many of them are also learning English as a second language. Due to their circumstances many do not have computers at home or parents with the necessary skills to assist them.
My 1st grade students attend a California elementary school. Most are Spanish-speaking English learners. Many of them are economically challenged and lack the home support to close the achievement gap. It is imperative that I do everything possible to encourage their learning. Despite the disadvantages, my students come to school every day with a good attitude and they are encouraged to learn. They put forth a tremendous effort and do so with smiles on their faces.
My Project
Right now we have an LCD projector, a laptop, and a document camera. One of the pieces that we are still missing is a printer. If we had a printer, my students would be able to print out their reports inside of our classroom. Right now, we have to save their work on a flash drive and borrow a printer from someone else just to print out the student's work. It gets to be quite a hassle. It's time-consuming and embarrassing to always have to ask someone to use their printer. We also feel bad that we use up their ink, which can be quite expensive.
If we had our own printer, we could print out our work and print images/pictures to enhance our classroom and our reports. We could also print out pictures of the students to include in special activities, such as when the students make their Christmas presents for their parents.
It would be an important tool in many ways.
This project is important because it exposes my students to just a little more of what technology has to offer.
This is essential knowledge that they will need in the future as they begin to prepare for higher education.
