I work in a low-income school district in rural Southwest Ohio. Almost half of the students in our building receive free or reduced lunch. Many students in our district have limited access to any experiences outside of our small town. Most of the students in our district did not have the good fortune to be raised in a two parent household and are being brought up by grandparents and even great-grandparents. Coming from a disadvantaged background does not hinder the educational achievement of my students. If anything, it makes their curiosity stronger.
Even though we may be economically disadvantaged, we still scored top in our county for state testing!
Our students come to school with a willingness to work hard and it shows. Students in our district have a strong desire to learn and succeed and strive for excellence in the classroom.
Getting students to want to read and want to write is an ongoing struggle most teachers battle with. Getting a classroom printer will help get students excited about learning again and give them access to print documents needed in classroom learning.
Being able use the printer to print their own writing and have a physical copy of what they have typed will help ignite a desire in my students to write.
Having a classroom printer will also give students the experience of printing documents on their own. This skill will help when students move on to high school and college.
