I provide speech therapy to 14-21-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments in our school's high school programs. While in school, my students spend their time preparing for life after high school. We work with each student individually to help them communicate what their personal goals and visions for their futures are.
My students are looking forward to being as independent as possible after high school.
A lot of my students participate in internships and jobs around our school building and in the community as part of their education. During speech sessions, we also work on interviewing skills, filling out job applications, cooking, cleaning, and functional writing skills.
Most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parents' homes, working, and being involved in their community when they finish school. Others are looking to continue their education in a college or vocational/trade training program.
My Project
In order to facilitate learning it is important that all students be provided with the necessary tools. Every day, my students spend hours preparing themselves for life after high school.
The laser printer and ink will provide my students with the opportunity to create vocational-related materials.
For example, with these materials, my students will be able to print their resumes with ease. In addition, they will be able to print and laminate maps, social stories, and visual schedules that will help them navigate their community.
