My students need a color printer/scanner and ink to create presentation projects with visual representations that show a deep understanding of the curriculum.
Team Infinity is a place students come to engage in creativity, problem solving, higher order thinking and teamwork challenges. My students know I expect them to reach for new levels, take smart risks, think with a problem-solving attitude, and persevere until they reach their highest potential.
Team Infinity, as the students named our class, is a group of 42 students who love to learn!
Their parents say our class is an overwhelming reason that they wake up ready to go to school. (That is a difficult feeling to find in many 4th/5th graders!!) Our neighborhood public school is home to many programs, a diverse population, and hard-working families. Our 500+ student body performs well due to the huge hearts of our teachers and parents, but as I say to my students, "There's always room for improvement!" My students are particularly interested in hands-on construction projects where they are given the responsibility to manage and make decisions. As the teacher, I facilitate, assign, assist if requested, and supervise. My students are the project managers, researchers, collaborators, and designers of the final product. They teach me new things everyday, and I make it my personal goal to help them find or investigate their passions in learning.
My Project
Each time my students embark on a new project, they get excited about all the ideas their team generates. They have asked me many times to print images that they make and find with color ink to give their products a polished finish, and I cannot grant their wish!
My students would use the technology to create and enhance presentation aides, scan artifacts from the past that they want to include in their digital presentations, and make handouts for classmates as they teach their peers about topics they are passionate about. Then they will present orally sharing the knowledge with others. No hoarding!!
This year the students are going to select a topic for their "Passion Projects" (something they are very interested in to share with others). The printer/scanner will allow them to creatively generate their presentation using self-selected programs like PowerPoint, Glogster, Prezi, or an old fashioned poster board! Technology opens the door!! Oral presentations are a needed life skill!
Giving students the tools to promote creativity and problem solving in their projects gives them confidence to try new things and learn through attempts.
Using colorful, polished, authentic visual aides will increase their confidence as they present and over time in general. Using technology effectively to enhance the product also encourages students to be independent thinkers, problem-solvers, and life-long learners.
Having this device at school will also allow ALL students to participate.
