Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager to learn and experiment with the various mediums in the art room. As a teacher in a low-income, high-poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, art can be a tool that allows them to help them to work through and overcome their challenges. I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences that they can use inside and outside of the art room.

The art room is a space where everyone is equal and each student's creation is their own unique form of art!

I always remind the kids that there are no mistakes in art and that creation, exploration, expression, and getting messy is a part of making art in our school. Through art, my students will not only learn the process of creating art, but also the value of the process and how creating art can help them in other aspects of their lives not and in the future.

My Project

I want to teach my students about early graphic designing and the ways designs are used in our everyday lives. Screen printing will serve multiple purposes in our art classroom. My students will learn the process of creating screen printing items. They will also learn about graphic design and have a chance to work as a group to create and to choose their best overall designs. I also want them to learn about collaboration within the artistic realm and to get a hands-on experience.

The goal of this project is to foster creativeness and a sense of ownership in my students with this screen printing material.

My students are going to be able to work collaboratively with each other and have a chance to wear their art. I hope this project not only helps them to grow creatively but that it helps them to also grow in their social and emotional skills as they collaborate on the design and creative process in creating their own shirts. Art is not only a vehicle for creating beautiful designs but can also be a way for students to learn to build beautiful working relationships.
