Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ours is an unusual community, a jarring blend of country living with big city issues. Poverty is the norm, with over 90% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Because so many of our students are children of the working poor, it becomes even more incumbent on us to provide a path out of poverty for these kids. They must be exposed to a broad range of topics and ideas they would not encounter in their community in order to prepare them for college and the wider world.
Art is the open window through which we view the past and the lens through which we envision the future.
Without art, the past would be obscured. To be healthy, happy, well-adjusted human beings, we need art as much as we need food, water, and exercise. Culture pumps through our blood and makes our souls sing. Adding art classes to our high school curriculum has already enhanced understanding of other subjects. My goal is to increase our students' understanding of themselves and their place in the world through an understanding of art and its importance in our world.
My Project
Purchasing supplies for an new project is difficult. Often, the expense outstrips our budget, making it nearly impossible to acquire everything needed in one go. That is the case with this grant. The supplies purchased with the original Print It! grant included most of the basics: cutters and handles, sharpening tools and brayers, printing blocks and blank cards.
In order to remain safe while using the sharp block cutters, my students need bench hooks to hold their blocks steady.
As an added bonus, those bench hooks also double as inking plates. To increase creativity and offer more options, festive metallic ink colors will be added to our palette. Students will have the option of making cards or making prints as we also add printmaking paper to our supplies. Purchasing more blocks will allow students to make several prints if they desire.
Your assistance in funding this project will allow my students to experience a new art form. Printmaking involves higher order thinking skills in that the student will have to plan the design and then "see" it in the negative, carving away those areas he wishes to remain white while leaving the outline of the design raised. This kind of creative problem solving transfers well to other fields of endeavor, such as mathematics and science, reinforcing the STEAM model of education.
