My students need color printer ink, card-stock, laminating pouches, and Velcro dots to make their learning activities relevant and accessible! We also need storage boxes to organize their activities.
If there is one word I could use to describe my students, it would be resilient. Despite having the odds stacked against them, my students show up every day with a willingness to learn. They are brave, insightful, and eager. The majority of students in my classroom have autism, which impacts their ability to communication and process sensory information. We often tell our students that they have autism, but autism sure doesn't have them. We know they can thrive with the correct school supports!
In addition to their unique learning needs, most of my students live at or below the poverty line and speak a language other than English at home.
They attend a neighborhood public school in an urban area. Unsurprisingly, funding is limited for special education programs. These circumstances set up a variety of barriers to my students' education. They have less access to high-quality curriculum, extracurricular activities, and basic classroom supplies. It's my goal as an educator to break down these barriers for my students.
My students deserve a high-quality education, but unfortunately our school and district lack the funding to make that happen. This is where you come in!
My Project
Many of the academic activities that my students complete are individualized to their needs. We focus on teaching individual student goals, and as a result it can often feel like we utilize several curricular resources at one time!
There is no "one size fits all" curriculum for my students, and they each require materials to be tailored to their specific academic needs.
I often seek out new and numerous curriculums online or create my own resources on the computer and print them for my students.
As a result, we use a large amount of color printer ink in our classroom. To make materials durable and reusable, I often print on card-stock and laminate my students' academic resources. Many of the activities, such as adapted books, matching and sorting activities, and flashcards, are interactive and require velcro. These consumable resources are the backbone of a special education classroom! While we had a full stock of printer ink, card-stock, lamination sleeves, and velcro dots in August, our supply is running low! At the rate we are going, we will be out of these materials before spring break! With several months left in the school year, we need these resources as soon as possible to keep up with the academic demand! Not only are we running low on these consumable materials, but our storage options are limited, too. We need new storage options to keep their learning materials organized!
My students constantly keep me on my toes in the sense that I am always researching, developing, and creating new materials for them to use to meet their goals! I need your help to help my students succeed!
We know it takes a village to educate a child ... and we are so glad to have you in ours.
