I am lucky enough to work with some of the most amazing teachers, staff, and students at my elementary school in Kansas. Being a Missouri native, I was scared about fitting in, but my sweet students have made me feel right at home. They are very welcoming and caring as well as high achievers that strive for improvement in all academic areas. My school provides students with rigorous academics and other activities that keep them excited about learning. The students enjoy challenging themselves to grow as learners so that they can become successful adults later in life.
Each student creates individual projects based off of personal interests at their independent skill level.
They are in charge of what they learn and are able to create their own curriculum based of personal inspirations and ideas. Allowing choice teaches students: how to work at their own pace and follow a line of thought over an extended period by being motivated and ready to work, how to learn from and work with peers by engaging in positive social interactions and collaborations, how to develop a personal style of art, and how to take responsibility of and care for supplies and materials.
My Project
All of my students want to learn to use as many different types of materials as they can. After elementary school, most of my students will choose to take different classes over art. I want to give them plenty of opportunities to explore new media and techniques. We have already explored drawing, painting, and collage techniques and materials, and we’re ready for a new challenge with new supplies. Printmaking is messy, which means it’s also very engaging!
If I receive the materials from this project, all of my students will have the chance to work together collaboratively with printmaking materials.
Right now, I only have enough supplies for a few students to work on printmaking projects at a time. Working together as team a fosters positive relationships, allows students to patience with sharing, and encourages socialization. Being part of a team and sharing ideas are pieces of the National Core Arts Standards that I use to create my curriculum.
