I work in a highly diverse, low income area in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Many of my students are first-generation American citizens from low-income areas. With this comes the struggles of bilingual education as well as dealing with poverty and systemic racism in our day to day lives. My goal is to make the science room a refuge for them.
My students are scientists, whether or not they realize it.
This is something I tell my students every day. Science is a part of everything we do, from breathing to walking to catching the morning school bus. The science room is a place of learning, but also a place of creativity and exploration. I want to foster both a safe space and love of learning in my room, and I hope that DonorsChoose.org can help me do that.
My Project
In the kindergarten and first-grade science standards, there are large portions surrounding sorting different objects in different ways. While these standards can be reached using pictures and paper cutting, my students crave tangible objects to sort.
These sorting animals would give my students the opportunity to both meet their science standards and work on their fine motor skills, in a way that is fun and engaging for them.
What primary student doesn't love animal toys? By moving from cutting and gluing to sorting animal and object toys, the students will be more engaged, and able to sort in more ways than just what their papers allow. These toys are also hands-on manipulatives that will help differentiate and reach a wider variety of students, such students with special needs and students who are English Language Learners. In addition, I will be able to use these in the older grades for learning about specific habitats and life science units.
Currently, my students have some dinosaurs that we are able to use for basic sorting that they absolutely adore. By donating to this project, you are helping me expand our collection of sorting objects. I look forward to seeing the looks on their faces when I am able to introduce the new manipulatives to my students. They will be ecstatic to use them in STEAM.
