Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Reading books with accurate representation helps us to understand how we see the world, why we see the world the way we do. It allows us to see the world through the eyes of somebody else. This creates a community where we acknowledge our shared humanity, our experiences and respect our differences.

While reading "Prieto Orgullo", my students will be able to explore the discrimination that Mexicans suffer in different spheres and make connections to their own life.

The book touches on themes such as intersectionality which is vital for students to unpack as they explore the intricate layers of their identity.

ABOUT PRIDE PRIETO - RANDOM PENGUIN HOUSE

Mexico is a racist country that denies being so. With arguments such as "It's not racism, but classism", "Here we are all mestizos" or "There was never a segregationist system like in the United States" we deny that we have perpetuated discrimination for generations.

Tenoch Huerta, an actor of recognized prestige and spokesperson for the debate and the anti-racist struggle in Mexico for years, is in charge of refuting these and other myths about racism in the pages of Orgullo prieto. In this book you will find a series of reflections on the different discriminations that a Mexican suffers because of his skin color in different spheres —social, work, family—, as well as numerous personal experiences of the author about situations in which he has been a victim. of racism, but also in which it has exercised racist practices typical of a problem that Mexico does not want to see.

«I hope this book contributes to extol the pride of being what we are, so that there is no "arrogant black", as they call me, but instead there are millions of proud blacks in this country.» – Tenoch Huerta
