Help me give my students the opportunity to read a great piece of historical fiction in their English classes that correlates with what they're learning in other subjects including chemistry, history and art electives.
My students are a part of the Visual and Performing Arts Pathway at our high school, so they are creative in many ways. My students are dancers, artists, musicians, composers, writers, actors and actresses. With so many creative individuals, my pathway works hard to create integrated and project based learning opportunities in order to inspire and ignite passion for our students in all that they do. Unfortunately, our students are a part of a low income school district, so we need support in order to obtain the resources our students deserve. Please help these beautiful, kind, hardworking scholars make stronger connections throughout their class curriculum!
I have three English 2 classes this year filled with a diverse group of young, amazing and talented individuals!
They all make stronger connections in their curriculum if they can see the connections between subject areas. They are looking forward to our next unit that connects learning between their history, English, chemistry, music, drama and art classes. Unfortunately, the English books that have been ordered may not make it in time, or not at all due to lack of funding.
My Project
By reading the novel Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch, students will be able to relate to people of the past and gain perspective on the lives of immigrants during the industrial revolution. Instead of just reading about the horrific triangle shirtwaist factory fire of 1911 from a textbook, they will be able to understand it from a more personal first hand perspective that is true to the time period even though it is fictional. Not only will this novel help to create real life connections for students based on this historical tragedy, but it will serve to connect students to the chemistry of fire and fire related tragedies that still affect people today, especially in California (Ghost Ship Fire in Oakland and forest fires throughout California).
This integrated unit will teach our students about how tragedies are almost always preventable through education and fair law enforcement.
Unfortunately, changes in laws and the enforcement of laws doesn't always happen until their is a tragedy. It will help students to understand the importance of being educated and working to make positive changes in their communities in order to protect the rights of the people.
