My Students
I am the Title I reading teacher at my school. My students are 4th and 5th graders. These students qualify for Title I services based on at-risk reading scores. These students are reading one or more years behind grade level. Some of them are also economically disadvantaged. Many do not have books of their own at home, nor do they get to the public library to borrow books. During the school year, they visit the school library and have good-fit books sent home with them nightly. However, in the summer months, many of these students have very few or no books to read.
My Project
My students are at-risk readers in grade 4 and 5, reading one or more years behind grade level. Every summer, these students experience a great drop in their reading scores. Research shows that this summer reading loss is most closely related to limited access to books over the summer months. Many of these students have few or no books at home and are not able to access the public library over the summer. Since these students are already at-risk readers, they can not afford any summer reading loss.
We want to take these students to the Scholastic Book Warehouse to purchase books for them to keep and read all summer long.
This will eliminate the problem of limited book access, reduce summer reading loss, and encourage a love of reading. This also allows for choice in what they will read which is another important factor in reading success. In addition, research shows that students are more likely to read books that they have purchased and own, rather than borrowed.
