Our school is a project-based learning school, where students are encouraged to combine their core educational skills in math, language arts, and science with technology and innovation in order to solve real-world problems.
As innovators, my students learn best when they are able to engage in hands-on experimentation and modeling of science concepts and systems.
My Project
It is largely believed that about 65 million years ago, a large asteroid collided with Earth, causing a huge explosion and a cascade of worldwide effects. While exploring this event from Earth's history, my students will be tasked with the challenge of designing a solution to prevent such a colossal collision again.
Critical to designing their solution will be planning and carrying out investigations using physics balls, a ramp and impact markers to make sense of Newton's laws and explain the effects of mass, forces and motion.
They will then use this new knowledge to brainstorm, prototype and test ideas for deflecting the asteroid.
