Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse backgrounds. A large portion of my school's population come from poverty-stricken homes; poverty is their everyday dark cloud. They are kids with hopes and dreams of making their lives better and bettering the future of their families. They deserve a chance to have hope. That hope begins by giving them a voice. They bring their suggestions to us and we listen. We do whatever it takes to help them find success in school and life.
It is our hope that their many successes in school translate into finding better lives for themselves and their families.
My Project
This year, I have the fortunate opportunity to teach computer science our school's library while managing the library as the librarian. For the first time in many years, I have perfect attendance. I attribute it to the space we have in the library AND there being four stations throughout the library with: hand sanitizer, face tissues, and lotion. Upon entering the library, most students look forward to a pump of hand sanitizer. There's always a line leading up to the hand sanitizer and students encourage one another to use it. I'm praying that was our saving grace when this hit us.
Where I live and teach, we are unfortunate in that, "Staten Island continued to have the highest rate of confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in New York City." This has been the story for many days as we began our household isolation.
I still have 8 days before finding out if I have symptoms since the incubation period is up to 14 days. Many of my friends and colleagues tested positive, so anything can happen in the next 8 days. I'm feeling hopeful, and especially because I've been taking careful precautions before COVID was a thing.
This project and projects like this, in my opinion, are the types of projects that keep us in school because we are healthy. Thank you for helping us, especially during these difficult times.
