Over 67% of our students receive free or reduced-priced lunch. So you can imagine what little experience they get to have outside their own home and often times cannot make real-life connections to what goes on in the classroom. Concepts are hard when there's nothing to compare them to.
We have 31 different subgroups of learners and our student population is one of the most diverse in the county.
Students speak a multitude of languages including English, Spanish, Hindi, Urdu, Swahili, Bengali, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Korean, Tagalog, French, and Arabic. As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their cognitive abilities.
My Project
Having laptops in the classroom really helps to differentiate instruction for students without it being obvious that they are doing different work from each other. In middle school perception is everything and students are reluctant to participate if they feel their work is dramatically different then the next person. We have all ability levels and this way the work is private and I can assign computer work in Google Classroom. Students are more engaged when working on the computer - it levels the playing field.
What they like most about it is being able to work at their own pace and getting immediate feedback.
I especially like it because English Language learners can translate when they need to, it helps us commuicate better without having to wait for someone else to interpret. These students have been on computers since birth - it's the tool of choice.
My learning challenged students especially like working on computers because they can work independently and at their own pace. Right now I have enough for partner pairs and hope to get more so everyone can work without sharing or waiting. Partners are of equal ability level so it's doable and they help each other but there is still waiting time. They see the laptop on the table and immediately head right to the virtual classroom.
