Help me give my students the gift of growing things. I want to show my kids that they can reuse items to make them into something beautiful and nutritional. We need storage boxes, seeds, and soil.
My students are typically from low-income families. The ages of my children range from 3 - young 5 year olds. I have 3 children going to kindergarten next year. I have one with autism, some with learning disabilities, and the rest are "traditional" students. We have studies we learn for about 4 -6 weeks at a time. We are finishing our Clothes Study. We will have a fashion show at the end of the study to show off the creations the children have made.
Even though my children are young, I like to get them started on life skills.
In each of our studies, we incorporate a cooking project. We also do family projects to be sure families are involved in what the children are learning. I teach not only their minds but hearts and souls.
My Project
The project we will do has two parts. One: take leftover food and make something useful instead of only trash. Two: Grow something from a seed and help it flourish. We will use some of the bins and soil to make a compost pile. Then using the other bins, dirt, and seeds we will grow beautiful flowers and vegetables. The children can plant the flowers around the school to add beauty. We can use the foods grown to make something to eat. The children will be learning multiple life skills as well as science, math, literacy, and working with others to improve their surroundings.
