My Students

I teach Pre-k in a diverse public school/Head Start collaboration. My students come from all different backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, family makeups, and trauma. All of my students require lots of attention and individualization.

Some of my students just need a place to feel safe and secure when nothing in their life is consistent.

In my classroom, my students are more like my children. They crave love, attention, affection, and consistency and this is exactly what I choose to give each and every one of them.

My Project

In Head Start, our main focus is improving each of our students social and emotional development. They have to be able to appropriately react to their feelings, resolve conflict, and be a part of our classroom community.

Children need opportunities to engage in pretend play in order to gain essential skills in their social and emotional development.

Through cooperative play, children learn how to take turns, share responsibility, and creatively problem-solve. Young children tend to see the world from their own egocentric point of view, but through cooperative play, they will begin to understand the feelings of others. It also builds self-esteem when children discover they can be anything just by pretending! Also, pretend play allows children to work out confusing, scary, or new life issues. This is crucial with the population of students that we teach. These materials will allow students to adequately meet their own needs in their social/emotional development.
