My students often chant at assemblies or walking through the hallways.
I look at them with my head tilted sideways, since I did not even teach them that saying. They love being in TK, or Transitional Kindergarten, and they love each other. I often joke that my class is very "kumbaya" since they all adore and respect each other so much. It's hard to tell sometimes what surrounds our school.
I teach at a Title I school in Sacramento where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students come from homes with very little to give besides love. Despite these challenges, my students are eager to learn and do their best. Their huge smiling faces as they chant do not indicate what struggles they have at home. They love being together and the community we have created in our room.
My Project
It's crazy to think that at the young age of four how much my students are learning. The biggest time for my students to learn is during play time. During this time students are putting into action everything they learn during the day.
I plan on setting up a mini grocery store in my classroom where students can go shopping, exchange money and learn about money values.
This area of the classroom will make learning about money fun, hands on and engaging. During math we will learn about money, what we do with money and the importance of money. We will begin to learn about different money values and get hands on time with play money.
I know students will love having this new addition and it will make them become financial literate from a young age.
