The thrill of discovery dominates my classroom. My students are 3 and 4 years old and this is their first time in school. Everything is new and exciting. Even simple tasks like washing hands is a chance to learn something new.
These children primarily come from low income homes with non-traditional families.
Many of their parents are under-educated. They have not had a lot of learning opportunities. I get the privilege of helping them take their first steps in school.
My Project
Giving my students materials for pretend play allows them to expand their thinking about the world they live in. Learning at the preschool level is all about play and expanding on what students already experience outside of school. Dollhouse supplies, kitchen materials, and dress up clothes let the students interact with things they see everyday used by adults. Now they get a chance to use them. Being an adult seems like a lot of fun when you are a kid.
These materials also allow students opportunities to engage with each other.
Homes are comprised of many people serving different roles. When students pretend they get to interact with each other and explore the roles family members serve in the household.
