I work with 31 fifth-grade students, 3 of whom have severe disabilities. They work together to help each other learn, regardless of each others areas of difficulty.
My students have a hard time understand what is happening in the world. I think this is because they do not yet understand how to read newspapers and/or news magazines. In addition, students need an opportunity to practice reading real graphs and real surveys that apply to them, rather than just the practice ones we learn about.
My students need news magazines so that they can learn how to read non-fiction text, while informing themselves about what is happening in the world around them. This will help with all content areas, because graphs will work with math skills, reading with language skills, current events will tie into both social studies and science concepts.
I have asked for different amounts of each magazine so that the students will be able to work in partners and discuss what is happening in the world around them. Then, as a class we will discuss why things are happening, and what what we can do to change or support what we believe. You will be enabling my students to become civic minded; aware of both the world around them, and his or her responsibility to this world.
