Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If we want students to be well-prepared for college and a career, they need to know how to produce professional quality work. Printing final projects on a large format printer will give them the tools to competently show their understanding and creativity.
I work with amazing 11th and 12th grade students from a high-need community who are attending our small college-preparatory charter school.
Over a period of two years I teach them Chemistry and Physics, and they have an option to take Robotics. Our school's primary mission is to help all of our students successfully graduate from college; for most of our students they will be the first in their family to attend college.
My Project
Visiting a national lab showed our students the work real scientists do. They saw the walls of the lab filled with experimental posters created by scientists detailing their work and discoveries. This large format printer will allow them to create conference ready science posters to share their inquiries with the community.
In robotics students will create CAD drawings of their robots. Using this printer, they will be able to print full size technical drawings of their work. They will also be able to create conference ready engineering posters to share their robots, circuits, and programs with the community.
All students at our school complete a senior project in order to graduate. Many students create a poster as their final product to share with teachers, mentors, and community members. This printer will raise the level of this product. In addition, creating a professional document like this helps prepare students for college and the work world.
Providing a professional, real-world experience is highly motivational for my students because it reflects what they will encounter after they graduate.
This project will push them to take their work on major projects to an unprecedented level. Seeing their final work printed on a full size poster will give them pride in their work.
