Presentation Matters

My Students

Students in my classroom start with whatever literacy skills they have, and they build upon that foundation in Spanish class. In addition to strengthening literacy skills, studying Spanish has opened new worlds for my students by providing them with a great understanding of and compassion for cultural differences.

Our school has an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse student body.

Some students study Spanish as heritage learners and some as a second language. For some who speak another language at home, studying Spanish is a third, fourth, or fifth language. No matter the student, they love to come to Spanish for a chance to experience and share in Hispanic culture.

My Project

My students have a classroom full of books in Spanish including familiar children's stories, small biographies, culturally relevant stories, novels by Latino authors and so many other great reads. Again and again, I have realized that they are unaware of the amazing gems they have at their disposal.

The bottom line: If you want kids to pick up a book, then presentation matters.

Rather than having our classroom books crammed on a shelf that few students will rifle through, I believe that I can create an appealing display by leveraging the wall space in our classroom with floating shelves and picture hanging strips.
