My Students

Our school's mission is "to develop a community of respectful lifelong learners who use inquiry, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills to be socially responsible contributors to a changing global society." Our students embody this mission from Kindergarten through 8th grade and beyond. As an IB magnet program, our school intentionally fosters these traits in our students, which results in deep conceptual understandings of challenges our world faces and solutions to address them.

CFI 84 students develop the agency needed to advocate for themselves and others through intentional learning experiences that build confidence, creative and critical thinking, and effective communication skills.

They are empowered to put forth their own solutions and ideas, and they know that their contributions are valued in our community and beyond. They urge each other to be positive contributors to our school, and they are curious and eager learners!

My Project

As an International Baccalaureate Magnet Program, our Middle Years Program (MYP) curriculum helps students develop the skills needed to be "socially responsible contributors to a changing global society." A capstone project of the MYP is the Community Project, in which students investigate an issue facing our school, local, national, or global community and design an action to address a component of that issue. Students talk to primary sources, design and redesign action plans, and reflect on the impact their project has had on themselves and on others. This project is presented to the community at a Community Project Showcase at our local IB high school, for which they create engaging presentations that include key elements of the project and call audience members to action in order to promote a collective positive impact on the world. Community Projects have led to permanent improvements within our school community, including the installation of water bottle fill-up stations, a Bike to School Day, and more.

Students take these projects seriously; therefore we want to equip them with the presentation tools to make a serious impact on their audience.

Wireless presentation clickers are a small tool that would make a big impact. These will free students up to move around a room during a presentation instead of remaining tied to a device, helping them make connections with audience members and reinforce the emotional appeal of their words. They will gain flexibility in presentation format so they will no longer have to rely on a stagnant, text-heavy PowerPoint. It will allow them to use visual imagery and real-life demonstrations to underscore the important information they share during their presentations. Most importantly, it will free students up to focus on the content and communication of their ideas rather than worry about running over to change slides!
