As a Speech-Language Pathologist working in an At-Risk Preschool, my students face many challenges at home and in their community. Many of them are living at or below the poverty line and some are new to the United States. In addition to these challenges, they see me because they have some sort of communication disorder!
These children love to learn, play, dance and move!
I hope to make their earliest school experiences as positive as possible and to help them overcome at least one of the challenges they may face in their daily lives!
My Project
My students need to move while they work so I am requesting three Hokki Stools that allow them to wobble in their seats. Hokki stools allow students to have playful movement while seated. According to the manufacturer, "Controlled freedom of movement stimulates the entire musculoskeletal system in a great variety of ways. Such activity is liberating and increases the sense of well being. Body and mind are activated and the natural urge to move around is supported in a productive way."
Research has shown time and again that our children need movement to learn because movement and memory are closely linked.
Our body is a tool for learning, not a hindrance and I want to allow my students the flexibility to continue moving while they work on their communication skills. The stools will give students the additional flexibility to get up quickly when larger movements are incorporated into my therapy. These stools won't be the only seating options in my therapy room, but they will give my students the option to choose how they will best learn.
