Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Camden, NJ has been ranked as America's most dangerous city. The majority of the students in my class receive free or reduced lunch. Despite the challenges my students face living in this environment they come to school eager to learn and grow. For many students school is their safe place and I want to create the best environment possible for them to feel safe, secure, and cared for. They are the future of this city and have the potential to improve their community.
My Project
Our classroom was previously a kindergarten classroom and was then used for storage. Most of the furniture is not sized for smaller preschool children and is in disrepair. Appropriately sized furniture is necessary not only for safety but to foster independence. I was able to repair and reupholster some of the storage and seating furniture, but the chairs are not adjustable or repairable. Some of the chairs we have are not only too big but wobble due to uneven legs causing a safety issue and a distraction. New chairs will not only help keep the students safe but also help them focus.
