My students are children with special needs from Raytown, Missouri. I work at an Early Learning Center whose students are 3 to 5 years old.
I specifically teach children with significant special needs such as autism, down syndrome, some with significant health, physical or cognitive needs.
Many have syndromes that have not yet been diagnosed. A large portion of these students come from poverty or low-income family situation or are in the foster system.
When these children come to my classroom, it is their first school experience. So not only are they working on pre-academic learning skills, they are working on school readiness skills such as sitting for group time, sharing, making friends, being social and listening to a direction from an adult. Almost all come to my classroom without a means for communication and are non-verbal. Many have sensory needs due to their autism diagnosis, a sensory processing disorder or other neurological disability.
My Project
It's important to offer children art experiences that support their creativity, enjoyment of art, thinking skills, and healthy development.
Process Art Experiences Support Many Aspects of Children’s Development.
Physical Development: A child’s small motor skills develop as he glues, draws, paints, and plays with clay or homemade dough. Small motor skills are important for future writing.
Language & Literacy Development: As you talk with children, their vocabulary expands when you name new art materials, tools, and concepts such as scissors, collage, purple, wide, sticky, and smooth. The child often tells you about the ideas she’s expressing through the art and this type of conversation supports literacy development.
Social and Emotional Development: There is joy and self-exploration in self-expression. Art supports the development of self-regulation and self-control as your child focuses, makes choices, and feels successful. The ability to focus is important to future school success.
The empty bottles I'm asking for are for the children to create their own sensory bottles. Many of my students have autism and sensory bottles can help them to learn to self-regulate their emotions and behaviors.
