Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My little scholars range from 3 to 5 years old and live in the Glenwood Springs, Colorado area. This is their second home in a dual-language (English & Spanish), experiential learning school. Coming to me from families of all different cultural background and economic status, roughly half of my students are on scholarship or receive assistance from the school district and/or community programs.
Each child is bright and brilliant in their own unique way and my passion is to ensure they each enjoy a learning experience filled with delight, good health, discovery and inspiration.
We spend time every day participating in group activities which explore STEM concepts, age appropriate math concepts and unleash their creativity. We incorporate early literacy prep, development of fine motor/gross motor skills and advancement of social emotional skills. Kindergarten readiness is a priority alongside a strong introduction to the Spanish language. Understanding and respect for the environment, the basics of good nutrition and physical health are consistently presented in our curriculum. Last but not least, these intense little learners have fun and love their time in the classroom...I hope to instill a love of learning in each of them.
My Project
Spring weather has arrived on our campus, with warm temperatures, flowering trees, sunshine and the children's need to be outside! We have begun creation of an outdoor classroom for our students...where we can hold morning circle, small and large group activities in literacy, math,STEM, nature studies and the arts. This classroom would typically be used outside in the late summer/fall months at the beginning of the school year (August, September and October) and in the spring time (April, May and early June). In the cold winter months equipment would be brought inside and utilized in our multipurpose room.
Our outdoor classroom will be located next to our organic garden, with a clear view of the osprey nesting box and the Roaring Fork River .
We are asking for basic classroom furnishings built to withstand outdoor weather. Work tables and an appropriate number of chairs for our class of 16 to be able to sit and work/learn together, share during snack time or eat lunch family style. We have asked for 2 rolling carts to be able to transport learning materials and student projects back and forth from the outdoor to the indoor classroom. Sturdy storage bins allow us to keep our materials and projects organized and out of the wind and rain (and occasional springtime mountain snowstorms!) During the cold winter months, this equipment will be brought inside and used in our multipurpose room.
