Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a very low-income urban school district, my students are faced with lots of challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things engaging and positive to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
The children love discovering new and challenging experiences and are always seeking lots of positive attention.
Many of them are being raised in single parent households who are grateful their children are given free breakfast and lunch. The obstacles faced by these children may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
My Preschool students need a place where they can get excited about books and storytelling. Love of books and storytelling will have a significant impact on their future learning. The best way to accomplish that is by providing students with a center where they can gather to use books and other text; to act out the stories and develop emergent reading skills. The problem? Not having a defined library area and storytelling tools makes it difficult to spark and sustain curiosity and motivation to use and appreciate books!
How to get the children excited about books and storytelling is to provide them with an environment and tools to interact with during reading experiences, book conversations and reflections is to create a defined library area to gather.
There they can choose to read themselves, read with a friend, do storytelling and act out familiar stories while developing growing knowledge of print and its uses. Choosing to use library resources is one of the most important things for my students to do each day, but they need an inviting environment. What a priceless gift of learning to preschool students!
A classroom should be a welcoming place where students have engaging materials and comfortable enough to put all their attention towards learning.
With an undefined library center my students often avoid choosing to use books. With your help, I can transform part of our room into a Library-Storytelling Center that is a most inviting spot by providing comfy seating options and organized hands-on storytelling materials at their fingertips! Soon we'll need a waiting list for that Center!
