Prepping for Lab

My students need aprons, dish cloths, and kitchen towels in order to aid preparations in food labs.

My Students

My high school is made up of about 750 students. Many of those students are considered in poverty. Many students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Students in foods courses get a sneak peek at the food service industry. In this course, students focus on ServSafe, knife skills, entrepreneurship, yeast breads, and cake decorating. By the end of the course, students know what culinary skills are expected of a potential food employee. Soft skills are also emphasized as an important key to any job.

My Project

Expectations during my food labs include more than just learning about a recipe and how to prepare it successfully. The students must also learn about other aspects of food preparations.

Students learn about personal hygiene and food safety and sanitation during labs.

Prior to labs, students must complete a unit plan on different aspects of safety and sanitation in the kitchen.

For personal hygiene, students reflect on how they take care of themselves. Students will consider hair, jewelry, clothing and hand washing techniques. Aprons are required for food labs. For safety and sanitation, dishcloths and kitchen towels are needed for proper cleaning.
