My students entered our classroom with diverse cultural backgrounds, experiences, skills, strengths and challenges. Many of my students have moved to the United States from various countries just before the start of the school year. Some even arrived weeks into the school year from other countries. They have very limited schooling in their own language and are now thrust into a formal school setting. We move from learning letters to reading very quickly. They hold the American Dream, but need the tools to make them successful.
I work in a large Title I school in Brooklyn, New York.
We are very limited on resources and would greatly appreciate support!
My Project
For years, I have subscribed to Scholastic News and it has been such a wonderful resource that allows for engagement in nonfiction for all kinds of learners. Since I work in a Title 1 school, it is very difficult for parents to be able to submit the money in the beginning of the year for me to be able to order the magazines for the children. Putting the burden on families breaks my heart so I would truly appreciate any sort of contribution.
The videos support technology based learning, which is crucial for our English language learners, the magazines allow for hands on learning and practice of reading, and the colorful illustrations leave the students excited to delve in!
Scholastic News, Science Spin, as well as the other nonfiction selections about plants and animals will perfectly align with our science curriculum and support students in a way that can cater to different types of learners.
