Preparing the Next Generation of Coders and STEM Thinkers
My students need LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Core Set to master coding, being a robotics club and compete in a First LEGO League Team. These kits will allow me to reach students in 3rd-5th grades.
I have the incredible opportunity of teaching students from all over the United States and world. Our school's diversity grows each year as we gain students from various socio-economic backgrounds, cultures and languages. Our students all have one thing in common, our school! We embrace a positive classroom culture and hands-on approach to learning. Many of our students come in contact with technology every day through school or at home, but have not been exposed to coding.
Our students are diverse leaders with a desire to learn, grow and make a difference in the school.
I have students of various academic levels throughout my day as I teach Academically Gifted Guided Reading and Math and various abilities for reading, writing, social studies and science.
My Project
The EV3 Mindstorms kit from LEGO Education will provide the hands-on, engaging learning experience to supplement curriculum for our students in grades 3-5. Students will have the opportunity to test, collect data, examine their results and make adjustments for rotation in degrees, measurement in various units and the sensors that come with the kits. In addition to benefiting students during math and science classes, the kits will be available to "check out" for teachers in grades 3-5. I have been trained on LEGO Mindstorms and will be leading PD for 3-5 so that they can use them to their full potential. We are also attempting to start a Robotics Club and will use the EV3 as the basis of our club materials. We will learn coding, problem-solving skills and apply them to real-world problems in the First LEGO League competition.
Our school recognizes the importance of STEM education and hands-on learning experiences for all students.
We believe that the sooner children are exposed to unique careers and engaging material, the more likely they are to pursue those careers and see a real purpose to their learning. This project aligns with many Common Core math standards (MD, NF, NBT) in addition to Next Generation Science Standards. EV3 provides an opportunity for students to engage in problem-solving and communication skills while applying their learning. We are so excited about the possibility of beginning a STEM program that directly benefits students in grades 3-5.
