Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's hard to get into college these days. A major obstacle that my students face is getting enough practice and exposure to test prep to raise their scores to look competitive on college applications.
The majority of my students are in 11th grade - the grade when they really need to start thinking and preparing for college.
Nearly all my students are low income and qualify for free and reduced lunches and cannot afford to buy several test prep books. Most of them will be first generation college students. In past years, the majority of students at my school attend local public colleges. Few of them are accepted into Tier I schools or Ivy Leagues, based on several factors with exam scores being one of them. My students attend an inner city public school that has limited resources for the students it serves.
My Project
By having a classroom library of ACT, SAT and AP exam books, students will have access to test preparation materials. Most of my students are not aware of the disadvantage they are in - lack of expensive test prep tutoring and exam books. Since many of them do not have family members who attended college, my students do not realize the extensive studying they must do to be successful on these tests that affect their college admissions. With this classroom library of college resources, my 11th graders will have a constant reminder that they need to begin studying in their junior year to do well on these exams and not wait last minute when they are seniors.
By donating to this project, you give students access and a better chance to be admitted into a college of their choice.
Most students in inner city schools have low expectations of their own scores, and by helping students prepare for exams, they will build their self-confidence and aim higher.
