In AP Chemistry, I like to challenge my students with higher order thinking to prepare them for college. I prepare my students for lab through lectures. I am faced with not having the technology needed to help my students be prepared for labs at the college level.
My AP Chemistry students are mature, intelligent seniors that are anxious to learn about chemistry at the college level.
My students are very well mannered and deserve to have the best and up-to-date technology available to them. We have a high graduation rate and many of our students go to college. Our school is a great school overall, but we have not had a grant to purchase any technology equipment since Hurricane Katrina. Therefore, no technology has been purchased for our students to use except through individual teacher grants.
My Project
If I am able to receive the iPad and the extras, then my students will be able to see molecules on the molecular level. With the apps available for the iPad, my students will be able to make 3D molecules using technology instead of with a ball and stick model in lab. They will be able to determine molecular geometry of compounds and show bonding of molecules while displaying our discoveries on the Promethean with the VGA adapter. We can have class discussions on our data from our discoveries while looking closely at what the molecules actually look like. It is hard for students to "see" what molecules look like by diagrams. Using the different apps available to us, my students will be able identify more closely with molecules that we can not see!
If my project gets funded and I am able to purchase the iPad with accessories, my students will be more prepared for future chemistry classes.
Over 95% of my students will attend college and take chemistry. My goal is to challenge my students and prepare them in any way that I can for future chemistry courses they may take.
