Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach PreK-8th Grade Library at a Dual Language Title I culturally and linguistically diverse urban elementary school. My students come from diverse backgrounds and speak several languages including Spanish, Arabic, Gujarati, Hindi, Cambodian and Tagalog.
My students are warm, intelligent, humble and highly competitive; every day they come to school eager to learn new educational experiences.
Our school community is 94% low income. Based on our school's CARES Philosophy our students daily demonstrate Citizenship, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, and Safety.
My Project
There are 21 titles for this year's Battle of the Books. When my students found out about the citywide reading competition, they approached and asked me to help them enter it.
As rising stars in our district, due to the fact that this year our school achieved level 1+ status (the highest level a public school can achieve), my students want a chance to enter BOTB and compete with peers of the same 7-8th grade age group.
My students will meet daily after school in early winter to read all of the titles and hope to make the early rounds and go on to compete in the spring of 2019. Our students have never been in BOTB and they have that competitive fire that will not be quenched. Please make their dreams come true!
