Mrs. Caravaglia-Moss from Flushing NY is requesting Reading Nooks, Desks & Storage through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students individual desks so that they can maintain social distance while still being together in our classroom!
Imagine spending many hours a day in a small classroom, with 30 other friends, trying to do your best. My class of second graders are eager learners, ready to grow stronger in their minds, bodies, and hearts.
We're a small, early childhood school that believes firmly that a healthy and active body is essential for learning.
Our school serves our students healthy and nutritious lunches and educates students on fitness and nutrition. We also believe that a child's imagination should be encouraged. Walk around our school and students will show you where the Super heroes sleep, the door to the chamber of secrets, hidden treasures, and the gate that leads to the dragon's den. The majority of our students come from families that immigrated to the United States to give their children the best opportunity to succeed. They value education very much, always want the best for their children, and will work long hours to support their family. Our school is dedicated to providing the best learning environment for our students.
When the school year begins in September, there will be no doubt that things will be done very differently. Arrival, breakfast, morning meetings, lunch, recess, and so many other parts of our school day will have to change due to COVID-19.
What makes accommodating for the changes especially difficult are the budget cuts that are happening across our city.
When we need more money for staff to cover more lunch and recess periods so children are able to socially distance and more custodial staff to help keep our building disinfected and cleaned, funds are no longer available.
Even the arrangement of our classrooms are required to change without the financial means to do it. To keep the students who are attending in-person learning safe, they need to be socially distanced and with our current furniture situation, it is proving to be very difficult. I am requesting individual desks to replace our current community tables that do not allow for proper social distancing. Our children need to be able to keep a safe distance in order to be in the classroom. These desks will allow for that to happen.
