This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are all vivacious, talented and ready to take on the world. In our classroom, students engage in rigorous study of acting and theater production. They are focused and loving.
I am so grateful to be one of my effervescent students' theater teachers.
I look forward to experiencing their love of theater as I share my own. We are like a family in our theater department. One of our favorite quotes is "Ohana means family." from the animated film "Lilo and Stitch." We feel it describes our world.
My Project
The costumes and accessories in this project will help my students create the worlds in the two plays She Kills Monsters and Macbeth. Both plays are about battles (with the self) and we need armor for the battles in both. I would like to design the costumes using a steampunk aesthetic to show characters caught between their past and their future. I believe steampunk provides that sense of mystery. The students will love to work with the accessories I've selected to create their characters.
I believe my girls will feel empowered and strong as the wear the steampunk costumes I've selected.
I'm always looking for ways to empower my students. Through this grant, I am able to provide them with high quality costuming that they deserve as they prepare for their careers in the arts.
