My Students

Why do many of our students possess a fixed-mindset? Where did they develop this sense of learned helplessness? I have heard many of my students say "I can't do this", "This is too hard", "I will never be good at math". Often, I have overheard other students, adults, other educators and community members talk about how some of my students will never be able to do something or how they can't do something, which contributes to their sense of learned helplessness.

My students are sensitive, strong-willed and social teenagers that need consistency and people that believe in them.

Despite the wide array of daily challenges that my students face at home or in their community, they show up to my class excited and ready to learn. Majority of my students are visual and tactile learners. All of them have interest in pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and math. They also want to pursue careers in entertainment, law, cosmetology and construction.

My students are starting to develop a growth mindset so that they can continue to persevere and raise above any challenges they may face in their future academic endeavors. We are working in a flipped classroom to make lessons more engaging.

My Project

We waste a tremendous amount of class time trying to make sure we have a writing utensil, finding our homework and organizing our resources at the beginning and end of class. Far too often, I have students asking for a pencil when class has already been in session for five to ten minutes. Wasting five minutes in each class, everyday, due to not having necessary materials or disorganization, can cost us to lose approximately fifty-four hundred minutes of meaningful learning throughout the school year.

By having these materials, students can better demonstrate their school PRIDE by being prepared, respectful, intelligent, driven and excellent.

Having access to these materials will allow students to enter class, grab their pencil case (which will have a pencil, ruler, calculator, plicker, pen, dry erase marker and eraser included) from the caddy on the wall, and get started on their bell ringer immediately.

We will not have to waste time transitioning between activities to pass out or collect materials. Students will not have an excuse as to why they are not prepared or organized.
