Our Pre-K to 8th grade school is in the heart of Cleveland; a city affected by a 53.9% child poverty rate. We have nearly 360 students who speak over 11 languages and are from all over Cleveland and the world. All of our amazing students receive free lunches.
Our school is in a high need and low income neighborhood.
Therefore, I am asking for lice treatment kits for our kids. Our school did not have a school nurse for the 2015/2016 school year and we most likely will not have a nurse for this coming year. Our teachers and administrators have taken on the role of school nurse, like many other schools in Cleveland. This past school year we had a Pop Up Food Pantry that helped meet the food needs of our kids but I am now proposing a Health Pantry. Our parents will have access to these lice treatment kits and will be able to get them in a confidential manner. Can you imagine coming to school every day with lice and not having the resources you need? This is a reality some kids all over the nation and in Cleveland face. Lice treatment kits can be an unexpected financial burden for families, especially for families with more than one child.
My Project
Help us provide these kids with access to the basic things they need to keep them healthy. Imagine trying to sit at a desk and learn or take one of the many state tests with an itchy head. Our families will have access to these lice treatment kits and will be able to obtain them in a confidential matter. I often think about education equity and how our students are often not provided with the same resources as students in other districts. A student's zip code should in no way determine the quality of education a child receives. Writing these grants on DonorsChoose is one way of trying to close the achievement gap and make sure our students in Cleveland always have the world before them. We need to help these kids break these barriers.
By offering lice treatment kits to our families in every grade, we are helping relieve an unexpected financial burden.
This will truly improve the quality of life for these students and families.
