My students need hands-on science materials such as prepared slides and an electrophoresis rig to fully appreciate and experience our science curriculum.
My students are either pregnant or parenting teens who are working to acquire their high school diploma. Unfortunately, we do not have the materials or resources that a regular comprehensive high school science department does. Please help. Thank you.
Our students attend an alternative high school specifically designed to teach pregnant and parenting teens.
Our students come from various different socio-economic and ethnically diverse backgrounds, but the one thing they have in common is they are all now parents with an added responsibility. Our program is not mandated but a by choice program, where they are choosing to complete their high school credits in spite of being a parent. I admire their strength and tenacity as they fight to not be part of the drop out population.
My Project
Unfortunately, as of now I have very limited resources to teach science. I lack a true science lab and am left to create a science experience with using microscopes and extension cords. These supplies (prepared slides and gel electrophoresis) will allow my students to really see first hand some of the curriculum that I am teaching to allow them a better appreciation for the subject matter and a way to connect to the material on a more personal basis. It will enable me to bring the science curriculum and state standards to life in my classroom.
Without your donations, we will continue making our own prepared slides or begging and borrowing from other schools to help support our program.
It would be a wonderful way to start putting together an actual material list for our science class. For our students we will see a heightened excitement for the curriculum, which means they will attend more regularly and will then be more likely to graduate on time with their diploma.
