My students live in a rural area in the small town of Decatur, Texas. For many of these students, they have grown up in this rural area and have not had the opportunity to leave the small area that they have grown up in.
I want to provide them with experiences that they will remember and that will open up their eyes to the opportunities that lie ahead of them.
Having these opportunities will allow them to set goals for their future.
My Project
Fifth grade students are expected to learn how food webs work in a variety of ecosystems. Most of my students have not had any exposure to ecosystems outside of the ones in their rural town.
Having animal models to manipulate to show predator and prey relationships as well as competition between animals can allow for a hands-on experience that will broaden my students' understanding of how an ecosystem works.
The wide variety of ecosystems represented by these animal figurines will allow the students to imagine themselves stepping outside of the classroom and into the wild. They will be able to manipulate how different populations change and how one animal has a huge effect on the food web as a whole.
