Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In a STEM magnet school, my students are bused in from locations all over the city I work in. Many of my students catch the school bus before their peers would even imagine waking up. They do this to be part of the unique opportunity offered at my school. My students know that the great education they receive is their first step toward changing the world they live in.
Minority students from all measured groups at my school score proficient at a rate more than 50% above the state average in English, more than 40% above in Math, and more than 40% above in Science.
My school provides an opportunity for students with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) to engage in two years of rigorous coursework exploring STEM. Before you think my school is one set aside for the "privileged," please know that my campus is classified as a highest poverty school. It is not a school for the privileged, but it is a school for the dedicated. My school is a school for students who are willing to work for something more, and shatter the achievement gap.
My Project
My students have been fortunate enough to be able to use 3D printers to create models and prototypes. Currently, they have been exposed to only one type of 3D printer, and the resources in this project will change that. My classroom 3D printers are of the type where a model is produced by placing layers of melted plastic on a build platform. The printer I am asking for in this project uses a method of hardening a liquid resin to produce 3D models.
Students should have access to experience different ways by which the same task can be completed.
By supporting this project, you will give my students access to a technology they have not yet been able to use. The process of creating models with resin has some advantages, and it also has some disadvantages. Students will be able to create the same models using both types of 3D printers, and will then be able to analyze the best uses for each. Please consider donating to make this experience possible.
