Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Pre-Kindergarten students come from diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. Many of my students are experiencing a classroom setting for the very first time and have never interacted with children their own age. Their social-emotional development is crucial at such an influential stage. Despite these challenges, my students love coming to school to learn. As a teacher in a program for low-income families, I provide high-risk students with a safe, loving, and caring environment where they can begin to feel secure and begin to open up for various learning opportunities in our free loving preschool.

My students are provided a notebook and are asked to practice writing daily.

They trace or write their name and draw pictures of items as asked. By helping my students improve their writing skills, they are being set up to enter kindergarten with these skills already developing.

I have requested resources such as individual whiteboards, fine motor tweezer tongs, and magnetic letters to help my students develop their writing skills.

Studies show how children who spend more time working with a pen and paper over typing on a keyboard have stronger reading and spelling skills.

Because of this, I want to provide my students with a variety of writing materials that they can use during journal time/center time to improve their writing. They can practice emotional awareness as they write about how they feel and why they feel that way.

My students build self-awareness as they complete pages in the journal that is telling everything about themselves. The students can also practice just writing for fun by drawing a picture and writing a story about the picture. Writing is an important skill to master at an early age.
