Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Cooperative learning centers are the first building block to creating a bully free zone. Through these centers the students get to practice important social skills and problem solving skills that carry on in their daily lives!
I am privileged to teach 36 pre-Kindergarten students.
They are eager and excited to learn. My students attend a large public school and come from low income households. All the students at the school receive free breakfast and also qualify for free after school programs. Most of my students are learning English as a second language and are attending school for the first time. They don't have many opportunities to participate in academically enriching activities outside of my classroom.
My Project
I am requesting books on the topic of bullying to help the students hear age appropriate stories that they can relate to and better understand what bullying is all about. The book "Bullying in Schools" and Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns About Bullies will serve as great tools to help educate my Pre-K students about how to treat each other. In addition, we need resources for our learning center where the students will get to practice what they learn about bullying and practice cooperative learning. The Tag Reader Pens will create a listening center, where the students not only get to work on literacy skills but also practice taking turns and sharing books. In our centers the students must learn to cooperate with their peers, share, and practice problem solving skills. Since there are only 6 students allowed in a center at a time, they must learn to take turns and work together.
Nothing is a more powerful than knowledge.
I want to teach my students that bullying is wrong. I feel this especially important for my Pre-Kindergarteners, since they are attending school for the first time and I want to build a strong foundation of character skills. The books and tag reading pens will help my students learn and practice cooperative learning!
