My students need access to a bigger variety of books like Pete the Cat, Crazy Hair Day, and The Little Red Hen to improve literacy skills and print concept knowledge.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I know some of my students are ready to read. It is my hope, that by the end of the school year, I can get some of them reading so that they can get a jump-start on kindergarten, and be successful students in years to come.
I teach at a Title 1 School in North Carolina.
My students are intelligent, inquisitive, eager learners, funny, kind, and whity. They're a fun class to teach. My school is an outdoor campus which makes it all the more interesting because we can interact with nature on a constant basis by simply stepping outside of our door.
My Project
Every day in our classroom we have read aloud in accordance with things we may be learning about or stories that the children are instrested in and ask me to read to them. Recently the 'higher ups' have been pressuring us to place more of an emphasis on reading and print concepts for kindergarten readiness. Most of the students are picking up on the concepts fast but I can sense they're craving more. I'd like to do some guided reading groups and I've also been discussing reading buddies with the fifth grade teachers here. It would give my students an opportunity to learn from someone other than myself in the same environment and they would get the skills they need for kindergarten success.
As I stated before I teach at a Title 1 school.
My kids are some of the neediest in the county. I'm a new teacher, and haven't had as much time to accumulate materials, as the other teachers have. This donation would help my students in this class as well as the years to come, by giving them kindergarten readiness skills in reading and literacy. Having access to the same materials as children that aren't as needy would level the playing field and help them reach success!
