Help me give my students a four person art painting easel, light cube with broken bone x-rays, wooden tree house and furniture, wooden community garages with a ramp and carpet to create their own town!
“I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge," Robert Fulghum. My school, is a diverse, neighborhood school in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh. I have 18 "Little Learners." Our school was recognized as a high achieving "STAR" school based on substantial academic student growth and achievement as compared to other schools across our state. Many students in my class begin the school year struggling with basic concepts such as letter, number, name, shape or sound identification, yet at the end of the year proficient in those concepts. Our school has 100% of students who receive free lunch, and who come from at-risk homes, some who live in shelters with a parent who is in recovery and battling addiction. Some students do not qualify for ESL services, but speak other languages such as Spanish at home. Others qualify for speech and language services. Imagination Station activities would promote real life language and conversational skills. My kindergarten students are in need of these supplies that promote imagination, discovery, and diversity. Pre-Kindergarten students visit our classroom in the spring to see what to expect when the enter kindergarten. Children who are considered medically fragile and have multiple disabilities are mainstreamed into my classroom.
My Project
Pre-K students will soon be transitioning into Kindergarten classrooms. This project will introduce them into the Kindergarten curriculum through developmental activities that they are used to, such as painting, dramatic block play, and imaginative role playing. I am trying to create "Imagination Stations" that are not outdated, and relevant to today's children. Ideas such as, living in a tree house, or creating solutions to issues in the "town" that you create will prepare the students for today's real world issues, as well as give them the opportunity to use their speech and STEAM skills in their diverse, inclusive classroom. These supplies will build upon, and complement my prior "Imagination Station" grants, with a focus on art and imagination. The children love our medical "Imagination Station" and really could use a light box to see the X-Rays with. The tree house will set imaginations flying high into the trees as the students create their home in the forest. The art easel will give my students more opportunity to express themselves through painting with the mobile unit. If this grant gets funding, my students will create towns using the roadway carpet and community garages. The Bluetooth CD system will allow me to play background mindful music such as birds chirping, and streams flowing, from my iPhone that will help create the mood for their imaginations.
