My students need props in order to get a full play based learning experience.

The students at James McHenry Elementary Middle School are amazing students that live in Baltimore City. However, due to the environment and academics that were in place the students were one of the lowest performing in the state for several years. James McHenry is now a turn around school with new staff like myself and many others who believe that a student's environment should not depict their future because all students are capable of learning. Many students start their day by walking to school with an older sibling and gathering for free breakfast in the cafeteria and then are dismissed into their classrooms to begin their journeys of learning!
My pre-k students are learning self -regulation activities that promote playing with a purpose.
However,in order to properly execute the curriculum of purposeful play many resources are needed. Our students dive into 6 units throughout the school year where they take on roles, learn vocabulary, and have scenarios in which they pretend to be in a restaurant, hospital, and grocery store to name a few. However with the extensive units and proper roll out of each unit, materials and props are needed to allow children to get a full learning experience.
The materials requested will benefits my students learning experience abundantly! As the students learn through play it enables them to self-regulate themselves and become independent learners. While students are pretending to place orders for their family and purchase from a restaurant or work in the restaurant as a waiter, chef, or hostess it will increase their level of understanding of how specific roles work together in an actual restaurant. With the restaurant writing box students can become a waiter and explain the menu to the customer. Using the cash register one student can pay for their family's food and another student can pretend to be a cashier.
In order for my students to become higher level thinkers materials are necessary so they are able to have the full learning experience.
My students will be able to pretend to be a veterinarian and a doctor with the doctor kits and help sick animals as well as people. They can be a manager of an icecream parlor that must keep inventory on the ice cream available in the store or help a customer for a birthday celebration. They can pretend to go grocery shopping with the shopping baskets and checkout when theyre done using the registers. Moreover, with significant props and preschool imaginations students will be able to get a real life experience and understanding of roles, scenarios, teamwork, communication, and see how math, writing, and reading are necessary in every day life tasks.
