I'm a New York City teacher in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. I teach pre-kindergarten in P.S./I.S. 323. It is very hard for our school to get supplies because we are a Title One school in a low-income area. About 95 percent of our students receive free lunch. My students are so eager to do literacy activities, but unfortunately, we lack the supplies and materials for them to learn. My class library has a few books, but not enough for the children to take home and share with their families. I only have enough books to read in class as part of shared reading and read alouds. I can't allow the students to take them home all at once because the library area would become empty. I would therefore like to create a class library and lending library that would enhance the students' literacy skills. I would also like to get materials that will promote growth in learning and dexterity. I am requesting funding for various art materials that will help us make collages and other art projects. I would like these supplies so that my children can be creative and have the supplies even when their parents cannot afford them. It would help our school out a lot. I have eighteen students in my classroom, and the supplies I need will help improve small and large motor skills as well as teach them the basics. I want my students to have these skills because I want them to have plenty of opportunities to be creative and ready for kindergarten. Thank you for your help!
