Our students come from many diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. Many of our students are English Language Learners and have completely immersed themselves into learning a new language. Our students mainly come from sections of Staten Island that have pockets of poverty. All students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Our school is part of the NYC Pre-K for All initiative.
This is the third year this program has been implemented. As educators, we take pride in being pioneers of this new initiative. However, with the lack of materials, it hinders our ability to provide a quality pre-K program to all students. We work collaboratively to make it possible, but feel our students could achieve so much more with the necessary tools. We want our students to be prepared and successful in their future school endeavors.
My Project
With materials such as the Melissa & Doug Grocery Store & Lemonade Stand and the KidKraft laundry Playset, my students will have ample opportunities to expand their imagination, increase their vocabulary, and develop interpersonal skills. These materials fuel creativity and set the stage for imaginative play. What I really love is that the Grocery Store & Stand could be adapted for so many other uses, such as a farmer’s market, clothing store, florist shop, and much more. It allows for active imaginations and is an excellent idea booster for kids who need a little help in the creativity department.
Just as beneficial: While kids are making these decisions during pretend play, they are also building simple analytic and problem-solving skills that will serve them for many years to come.
With this open-ended play set, there is plenty of room for decision-making and self-direction, all in a playful setting.
