The goal of this program is to promote high levels of academic achievement, oral language development in the student's first language (Vietnamese), and full English language and academic proficiency.
Our student population is made up of a very diverse community, with the minority enrollment at 92%.
My students come to school eager to learn everyday. They are enthusiastic, curious, and energetic. Many students in bilingual programs have never been in a school setting.
My Project
The activities and materials chosen support learning in small group settings and independent centers. Small group settings allow us to meet individual children's needs, building language, math, and science skills. Independent centers allows children to choose activities that reinforce materials they have learned in whole group settings. This also lets them explore together, increasing vocabulary and communication skills.
The Big Mouth Animal Puppets will be used in a whole group setting to encourage social behavior and to add fun and excitement to read-alouds.
Literacy materials will be used to build vocabulary with second language learners. They visually can see a picture and identify the words with the items.
Introducing Pre-k children to science language and activities is a big step. Experiments and hands-on learning are key to understanding and retaining new information.
Second language learners often have difficulty with positional words. Supporting their learning through books and hands-on materials helps them grasp abstract words and use them in their everyday conversations.
Often neglected areas include things to take home to do with moms and dads. Sheet protectors allow us to send home materials that children can use with dry erase markers. They can build on the skills they learned and perfect handwriting and letter and number recognition.
